Mustard Seed Street Church Ministries
Mission Statement
To show God’s love in Christ by working in partnership with the church, community and those in need so that together we achieve wholeness.
Jesus says …
For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat,
I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink,
I was a stranger and you invited me in,
I needed clothes and you clothed me,
I was sick and you looked after me,
I was in prison and you came to visit me. ~ Matthew 25:35-36
The Mustard Seed Street Church
The Parable of the Mustard Seed Matthew 13: 31-32 ~ He told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all your seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and perch in its branches.”
The Mustard Seed Street Church had its origin in a vision given to one man. The vision was of a small seed, a mustard seed, being planted. He pictured a church being planted in the Garden City of Victoria. The church would be planted in previously uncultivated soil. This church would be a Street Church, serving people by proclaiming and practicing the good news of Jesus. The vision began to be realized in 1975 at a prayer stool within a Government Street store closet. Before long, the need was so great that the ministry moved to a building on Pandora Avenue. The church soon grew to include a food bank, clothing bank, counselling service and prison ministry. In 1995 the Mustard Seed was transplanted to our current location at 625 Queens Avenue. These larger facilities have brought an enlarged dimension to existing ministries and the addition of new services. The tiny seed has grown to be a large plant.
Today the Mustard Seed Street Church branches out with many ministries. Some of the ways we offer support are: the clothing bank which provides free and small household items and used clothing for all ages; the prison ministry of visitation to inmates; the advocacy service, assisting in legal and social service matters; the Fairstart program which every fall provides free school supplies; the drop-in for coffee and baked goods on weekdays and a meal on Saturday nights; a parish nurse who is able to assist with health issues; a Narcotics Anonymous meeting place; Connection to Freedom meeting for ex-cons, recovering alcohol and drug addicts; the volunteer program which utilizes the skills of thirty persons daily and over six hundred persons yearly; a Christmas dinner to feed nine-hundred people; Hope Farm Healing Centre, a year long program offering wholeness to persons broken by addictive lifestyles; the youth group, creatively connecting youth to life. In addition the Seed offers Christian counselling, Bible study groups, Sunday school and Sunday worship, celebrating God’s love for us and goodness to us.
